Where in Seoul Is the Pizza Place from 'Parasite'?
Ever watch "Parasite" and find your eyes lingering not just on the Oscar-winning drama but on the humble pizza boxes that set the plot in motion?
Those now-famous boxes have a real-world origin story, and they lead back to a little pizzeria in South Korea called Sky Pizza. This unassuming shop, also known as "Pizza Generation" or "Pizza Age" (피자시대) on film, is where the Kim family plots to oust the rich family's housekeeper. In 2018, director Bong Joon Ho came and turned this spot into a slice of cinematic history, a taste of movie magic if you will.
On your next visit to Seoul, skip your usual mainstream fast food joints and try to support a small business. It's a little off the beaten path but well worth it. Using Google Maps or Naver Map, you will easily find Sky Pizza at 86, Noryangjin-ro 6-gil, Dongjak-gu, Seoul (서울특별시 동작구 노량진로6길 86).
You can't miss the pizzeria as you approach. The windows are covered in decals flaunting a "Parasite Photo Zone," a clear invite to all cinephiles.
If that's not enough for your socials, you have to come in and see the pizza boxes for yourself.
The memorabilia doesn't stop there. Keep your eyes peeled for a signed photo of director Bong Joon Ho with the owner, Eom Hang-il, which takes pride of place inside.
On my visit, it was hanging for all to see, right on the refrigerator. Ms. Eom wasn't around on my visit, but a man happily took my order.
The shop is intimate with limited seating, so get ready to share a table with a complete stranger and bond over pizza and a shared love for film.
Don’t forget to sign the guestbook! It was gleefully shown to me and filled with glowing comments in different languages, from fans all over the world.
There really is no question about it, nor do we need an accounting firm to verify the results. The Oscar for Best Pizza Box in a Motion Picture goes to…Sky Pizza!
